EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT

THE CHALLENGE

Helen’s Story

One of our coaching clients was a recently promoted member of the board. Helen has an impressive professional background but found herself in need of support.

She was Head of Department and would arrive at work determined to make her area of business a success. She began to enjoy the battle with colleagues for resources and toughened up her own leadership style in order to ‘knock her own direct reports into shape’ as she described it. She had a strong desire to prove herself and buried her self-doubts with hard work, a hands-on approach.

One day the CEO gave her some challenging feedback. He was concerned that she hadn’t embraced the new role and he could sense friction with her team. He was also concerned about her contribution to the executive team and recommended our services.

One of our team spent some time with Helen and discussed the feedback and the reasons behind it. It transpired that Helen had been promoted but felt vulnerable in her new role. She didn’t really know how to pull her senior team together; she felt uncertain about how to shape a cohesive strategy; she came to work with a strong departmental mindset and hadn’t spotted that the Exec team was now more important than her functional role.

Our work together helped her to step up into the executive role. These pages describe some of the interventions we used. and the outcomes.

SHARPEN THE SAW

This expression was used by Steven Covey in his book ‘The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People’ as shorthand for people who constantly develop new thinking and immerse themselves in personal learning.

Senior Leaders are experienced people and have often been through a range of development programmes as their career has progressed. Sometimes they need professional updating and alignment around a common philosophy. Our workshops are designed to raise the bar on individual and collective performance.
